Cherokee County is a beautiful place with a lot to do. Whether it's hiking, fishing, shopping, or exploring the county’s many historic districts and unincorporated communities, family fun for everyone is nearby! In a sea of indoor and outdoor attractions and entertainment options, here are the 3 reasons that make the Cherokee County History Center the top thing to do in the whole county.
1. State-of-the-art interactives
Across the History Center’s six galleries, we offer a variety of different high-tech interactive exhibits that put you right in the heart of history. From immersive digital maps to race car simulations, there’s plenty of things to do in all of our galleries.
2. World-class films
Inside the Douglas Gallery, we offer two documentary films covering 1950s and 1960s history. Our Black History documentary follows the stories of Black Cherokee County natives during the time of the Civil Rights Movement. Our other film explores Cherokee County in the 1950s and includes footage from the 1955 Cantex Factory Fire along with stories from locals.
3. Expansive and community-oriented histories
The History Center spans 10,000+ years of Cherokee County history, from Indignenous cultures and peoples that originally inhabited the land, to the Dixie Speedway and the present. The history we share is community sourced, meaning people across the county have shared some part of their history with us to make this museum possible.
You too can be a part of history in our temporary You Are Here exhibit in the Byron L. Dobbs Gallery. Between now and February 2023, draw a portrait, share a bit about yourself, and hang your portrait among hundreds of others. How will you make history?
