Have you been struggling with anxiety recently? Maybe you need help with recovery of an injury or illness. Or perhaps you’ve been looking for a new way to relax in your spare time. August 15 is better known as National Relaxation Day, so right now there’s no better time to start looking for something new to help with all of the above.
In 2018, the Association des Médecins francophones du Canada launched a research project into how visiting museums can help with all sorts of issues such as anxiety, cognitive disorders, mental health, and neurological conditions. Their project has led to people even being written prescriptions for museum visits!
The World Health Organization published a 2018 report of data that coincided with the Association’s project. They reported compelling evidence linking the exposure to art and cultural activities to promoting health and well-being. In 2021, Mikaela Law, a psychology researcher at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, asked why this happens. Her studies showed that contact with the visual stimulations museums provide lowers blood pressure, heart rate, and cortisol levels. A ten year long study in England showed those who regularly visited museums had a 50% lower risk of dementia and depression and a 40% less chance of developing geriatric frailty syndrome.
When it comes to reasons to visit the Cherokee County History Center, there couldn’t be more positive ones. From being a fun family experience to helping promote good health and positive vibes, the History Center is the place to be for this year’s National Relaxation Day. Visiting museums provides a remedy for exhaustion, creative spark, and most importantly a connection to humanity throughout the ages. And it's cheaper than the spa!
