Holly Springs is a city in Cherokee County in the state of Georgia. Declared the ‘Town of Holly Springs’ by the Georgia General Assembly in 1906, keep reading to learn 5 historical facts about Holly Springs.
1. Holly Springs has 4 unincorporated communities: Hickory Flat, Toonigh, Lebanon, and Sixes. Each of these communities has a rich history. Sixes was home to Fort Sixes, a fort dedicated to the forced removal of the indigenous Cherokee population.
2. The name of Holly Springs allegedly comes from a grouping of Holly trees located near a spring that served as a gathering place for indigenous peoples who resided on the land prior to colonial settlement.
3. In the early 2000s, Holly Springs committed to the historic preservation of its iconic train depot. With grant funding from the National Transportation Enhancement Fund and private cash donations, the City set off to complete arguably one of its best preservation projects- resulting in its recognition in the National Transportation Enhancement Clearinghouse publication. The depot is still wonderfully preserved today and is one of the only two depots left in Cherokee County.
4. Holly Springs is also home to its own brand of community politics. In 2011, Holly Springs residents were caught between the city approval of Hickory Liquor and Wine Co. with the location of the liquor store being one of the larger concerns of those in opposition. The store was approved despite the opposition and still remains today at 6115 Hickory Flat Highway.
